Well, I see a lot of steam engines running around layouts that really don’t capture the ‘Transition Era’. Of course part of the game was to find unused ‘torpedoes’ to set out on the rails a little further down from the yard. So a quick bike trip was always available to watch switchers in action. Although it was 2 blocks, there were maybe 4 houses between the Yard and our house. How many of us actually remember Steam Engines in daily service? I do, as a kid, I lived about 2 city blocks from the GM&O roundhouse and turntable at the Glenn Yard in Chicago.

Many modelers are working with the ‘Transition Time period of switching from Steam Powered to Diesel and Diesel-Electric power. Being a “Boomer”, that brings up some different connotations. This ‘project’ is called “Out of a bottle”. So rather than serving up Getoffyourduff blend of coffee in the lounge.

This past year certainly has been one to put in the rear view mirror for this old bird.
